Note: The “ sstate-cache" (sstate\_\_2021.2.tar.gz) file can be found on the Xilinx [download](https://www.xilinx.com/downloadNav/embedded-design-tools/2020-2.html) area along with an associated [README](https://www.xilinx.com/bin/public/openDownload?filename=sstate_rel_2021.2_README.txt) file that outlines the procedure to use "sstate cache".

Refer to the ”2021.2_PetaLinux_Packages_List.xlsx” from attachments for software package versions tested on host machines, which is required for PetaLinux installation tools.

2021.2 New Features:

PetaLinux

• MCS generation support for Zynq, ZynqMP and Versal 
• bootgen.bif file is generated in the PetaLinux project (images/linux) directory. 
• Baud rate configuration option for Versal U-boot and Linux
• platform-top.h is enabled/available by default for all platforms.
• package-feeds URI and arches are used directly from Yocto
• image.gz support for aarch64 family (build and boot)
• Option to enable board DT alias (enabled by default for SOM BSP’s)
• Added support for configuring MAC address in k26 starter kit BSP based on data in FRU

2021.2 Bug Fixes:

PetaLinux

• Fixed documentation issues in UG1144.
  • By default meta-user layer has the PRIORITY of 7. To override the meta-user layer priority set the priority higher than meta-user. This is updated in UG1144 doc page 93.
  • In 2021.1 release version of UG1144, petalinux-package –bsp –hwsource instruction is incorrect. From petalinux tool point of view –hwsource option should be specified after –project(-p). Fixed in UG1144 page 250.
  • In UG1144 docs, Instructions on how and when pl-custom.dtsi should be used is missing. This can be used only when we enable fpga manager and dt overlay in config. This is updated in UG1144 in page 153 and 157.
  • Missing information on –rootfs in JTAG boot mode in UG1144 and in petalinux-boot –jtag help. Updated in UG1144 page 46, 47 and 242.
  • Fixed migration section issues with all the new changes in migration section with screen shots in UG1144.
• The switchroot is disabled for zynqMP and Versal in template flow i.e, INITRAMFS/INITRD Image Name in petalinux-config option is set to petalinux-image-minimal instead of petalinux-initramfs-minimal.
• Changing ATF location to DDR location in ZCU104 BSP,Build is getting success but when we boot it is getting hang. This is due to missing node based on atf address specified by user in petalinux-config and this was fixed.
• In the 2020.x and 2021.x release version of PetaLinux, if the user adds any config or U-Boot env variables to  platform-top.h,  they do not get included in the U-Boot distro boot build for SoC and FPGA devices. This was fixed in 2021.2 petalinux tools.

Note:

1. Empty packages are not installed means assuming these are default from Linux Distribution.
2. For RHEL/CentOS you need to installGitPython and jinja2 using pip3 commands as mentioned below.

Host GCC Version Upgrade:

From 2021.2 release, the gcc version should be greater than 6. Using lower versions of gcc causes build issues. You can also enable the Enable buildtools extended option from petalinux -config → Yocto settings, which uses the pre-compiled gcc binaries from the PetaLinux tool.
